4. Activities

(1) Survey and Report
The Centre conducts an annual survey of education systems and the labor situations both inside and outside Japan. The results and findings of the survey are compiled in a report which is distributed to education institutions, hotels and individuals.

(2) Collection of Literature and Information
The center's library contains books, videos, CD-Rom, and research reports and papers. In total there are more than 8,000 pieces of material, all related to the operation and management hotel industry, both in Japan and worldwide. The library is open to the public.

(3) Management of the Japan Hotel School
The Japan Hotel School offers education and training to applicants who wish to acquire professional knowledge and skills for their career in the hotel industry.

(4) Development of Educational Materials
The centre has developed a series of textbooks that are used by the Japan Hotel School and many other education institutions throughout Japan. The centre also started a new test ("Hotelier Proficiency Test") system for students and hotel employees.

(5) Educational Programs
The centre also offers systematic training programs to hotel employees. These programs are:
1) HMS - Hotel Management Simulation, for upper management staff,
2) HOP - Hotel Operation Program for middle management staff,
3) HDP - Hotel Development Program for business planning staff, and
4) HBP - Hotel Beginner's Program for newcomers to the hotel industry.
The centre also designs and implements training programs to meet the specialized needs of clients. Training programs vary from new-employee orientation programs to management programs.

(6) International Cooperation and Exchange Activities
The centre promotes international exchange activities through its ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the International Tourism Development Institute of Japan (ITDIJ).

(7) Hotel Industry Management School for Further Education
Since 2001, the centre has been offering a unique course of study, providing an opportunity for hospitality employees to further their education and training. Participants study up-to-date management techniques and trends in the hospitality business at seventeen seminars held throughout the year, May to February. This education is targeted to hotel middle-management staff. Representatives of upper management from the industry are invited as Instructors.

(8) Organizing and Assisting the Okami Association
   of Japanese Ryokan
The centre has organized and assisted the OAJR since 1995. In cooperation with the Japan National Tourist Organization, a non-profit organization under the ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, the Centre has conducted seminars and receptions in major metropolitan areas throughout the world, to promote Japanese Ryokan and to support the globalization of Ryokan management through actual experiences in foreign countries.

 

5. Educational Materials and Programs

The Japan Education Centre for the Hotel Industry maintains a library in the basement of the Japan Hotel School building that contains books, videos and CD-Rom related to the hotel and tourism industries. In total there are more than 8,000 sources of information. Recent additions include 112 new textbooks used in Hotel Studies courses at Cornell University, and videotapes and 5 CD-Rom from the American Hotel and Motel Association (AH&MA). (5) Hotelier Proficiency Test
The Centre introduced a new proficiency test and textbook to hotel schools and the industry in 1998. The test is composed of ten chapters, and is offered at four levels of difficulty. Basic Levels one and two are intended for students, and Managerial Levels one and two are designed for hotel employees. Each chapter corresponds to a different hotel job (e.g., Rooms, Food & Beverage, Accounting). The purpose of the test is to a) establish a standard set of objectives for students and employees, and b) measure the students' total knowledge of the integrated hotel system of jobs. The Centre issues a certificate to those students who pass the test. About 2000 students take this exam every year.
